Officials broke ground Monday on a new high-speed rail system that will connect Southern California and Las Vegas. The Brightline West system, touted as the "first true high-speed rail system" in the U.S., will run across a 218-mile route between Las Vegas and three California stops including Rancho Cucamonga, about 40 miles east of Los Angeles. Brightline's first rail system launched in Florida and the route spans between Miami and Orlando. Trains reach speeds of up to 125 mph, connecting the two cities in about 3.5 hours. "People have been dreaming of high-speed rail in America for decades — and now, with billions of dollars of support made possible by President Biden's historic infrastructure law, it's finally happening," Buttigieg said in the release.

The director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office warned House lawmakers Wednesday that the ballooning national debt and the cost of paying interest on it could become an existential threat to the U.S. economy. "Rising interest costs will crowd out other possible uses of government resources, and then also pose a risk to our economic stability" in the coming decade, CBO director Phillip Swagel told the budget committee at a hearing on Capitol Hill. Swagel's testimony centered around CBO's semi-annual report on the federal budget and the economy, released Feb. 7. The CBO report projected that the yearly U.S. budget deficit would grow by an estimated $1 trillion over the next 10 years.

Airfare fell 6.4% in January from a year earlier, the Labor Department said in its monthly consumer price index report on Tuesday. January is typically a slower month for travel as customers take fewer trips following the New Year's holiday. The drop comes even though carriers are facing capacity constraints this year, in part because of an engine recall from Pratt & Whitney , congested airspace and delayed aircraft deliveries. In 2023, airlines had been forced to discount flights, particularly in off-peak periods, after the industry added capacity. ...Those operating environment challenges led directly to industry capacity plans, including our own, coming down 3 points on average as carriers adapted to the new operating environment," Kirby said.
